Seattle Seahawks…An Exciting Team To Watch

Seattle Washington became home to the Seahawks in 1976. The expansion team played their first game in August of that year against the San Francisco 49ers. They are the only team to have switched conferences twice since the AFL/NFL merger.

The Seattle Seahawks have earned six division championships since joining the NFL. They have only been to one Super Bowl, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Detroit in the 2005 season.

Qwest Field is the official home of the Seattle Seahawks. This legendary stadium is known as the loudest in the league, with the fan noise accounting for much of the home field advantage enjoyed by this team. The noise is blamed for the increased number of false starts attributed to visitors. The stadium seats 67,000 with 7,000 of those being club seats and 100 private suites. There are also an extra 5,000 available seats that can be set up for special events.

The Seahawks also have an amazing group of women who show up to each game. The Sea Gals are the official cheerleaders of Seattle. They add spirit and pep to games and off the field they are at work as well. The show group is comprised of several of the most talented of the Sea Gals who make appearances at many different events. The Sea Gals are also known for joining the Seahawks players in charity work throughout the area.

As with any other team, the Seattle Seahawks take their commitment to the community very seriously. They are involved in many local charities and efforts to help the less fortunate. The Seattle Seahawks Charitable Foundation was started in 1995 to encourage fitness and health in youth. There are numerous programs that the Seahawks participate in to encourage children to strive for success and live healthier lives, and they have also partnered with groups like the American Heart Association in order to help achieve these goals.

The fans account for a large amount of the team’s successes, especially at home. Because of the noise and distraction that they produce, the Seahawks decided to start the tradition of the “12 man.” The fans are considered the twelfth player in their games and in December of 1984 the team’s owner retired the number 12. Jerseys are sold with the number on it but rather than a player’s name, the jerseys say “Fans.”

In 2003, the tradition of the twelfth man was carried even further when the Twelfth Man Flag was raised for the first time. Now, before every home game, a local celebrity, former Seahawks player, or local sports personality is called on to raise the flag just before kickoff. It is considered a privilege to raise the flag and the fans as well as the team look forward to the event at each home game.

The noise from the fans at Qwest Field actually prompted a noise restriction by the NFL but that rule is not enforced and the fans are responsible for the highest average false start record of any stadium in the league.

Seattle Seahawks football is an experience not to be missed. The team plays good ball, and the fans are amazing and supportive. The stadium is legendary, and the Sea Gals are always an added plus. Going to a game at Qwest Field to see the Seahawks is guaranteed to be a good time.
